A rink under the roof of an 1889 brick factory

The skating rink at Evergreen Brick Works sits on the site of the Don Valley Brick Works, the factory and quarry that made the bricks that built Toronto. William Taylor and his two brothers opened the works in 1889, and the factory closed in 1984. Sixteen heritage buildings survive today, beside the 16-hectare Weston Family Quarry Garden.

Evergreen broke ground on the site's redevelopment on a cold December morning in 2008, and in 2010 it turned the deteriorating heritage buildings into a showcase for green design, opened as a year-round demonstration of how past and present can work together. In 2017 the charity started a further redevelopment of the historic kiln building, with carbon neutrality as the end goal. On July 16, 2024, the site went through one of the most severe floods in its history.

The rink itself is outdoor but covered: it weaves through snow-covered gardens beneath the exposed beams of the old factory roof. Public skating runs only when the weather allows, and in warm or extreme weather Evergreen cancels lessons and closes the ice.
