Opened in 1951 as a Second World War memorial

Leaside Memorial Community Gardens opened in 1951 on land donated by the Lea family, and it was named for the Second World War veterans: a plaque outside remembers the men of the Town of Leaside who gave their lives in 1939–1945. It is run today as an agency of the City of Toronto.

Seven NHL players began their careers here, among them Peter Mahovlich Jr., Brad Selwood and Paul and Dave Gardner, and their retired sweaters hang in the Bert F. Grant Arena. Peter Mahovlich Sr. was the building’s skate sharpener and Zamboni driver. The other rink carries the name of Dr. Tom Pashby, who often sutured young players here before face protection was mandated and became known worldwide for his work preventing catastrophic sports injuries.

The second rink opened in September 2013, after the City bought the neighbouring property at 1075 Millwood Road in 2009 and the community raised the last CA$2.5 million. The Leaside Hockey Association, the second largest in the GTHL, and the Toronto Leaside Girls Hockey Association both call it home.
