Flemingdon Park's community arena, renamed in 2009 for Hockey Hall of Famer Angela James
Angela James Arena is the community arena of Toronto's Flemingdon Park neighbourhood, and was known as Flemingdon Arena until 2009. That year it was renamed for Angela James, the hockey player who first played organized hockey in a Flemingdon Park boys house league and went on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
James joined that boys league at the age of eight, and only after her mother threatened legal action when officials opposed her inclusion. She started in the novice group for seven- and eight-year-olds, but her skill was so far beyond her peers that she was moved up to atom and then peewee, and she dominated the Flemingdon Park league.
Today Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation runs the arena as one of a group of Flemingdon Park facilities that also includes the Flemingdon Community Centre and the Dennis R. Timbrell Resource Centre. Spectators watch from an ice-rink viewing platform. Outdoor tennis courts and pickleball courts share the site, and the arena floor doubles as an indoor dry pad.
