A 125,000 sq ft Thornhill centre built in 1982-84 and reopened after renovations in December 2023
The Garnet A. Williams Community Centre is a 125,000-square-foot facility in Thornhill, originally constructed between 1982 and 1984. Vaughan describes it as its oldest multi-use community centre, and it has provided programs to Thornhill residents since 1984. The building holds an indoor arena, leisure pool, fitness centre, gymnasium, activity rooms, and squash and racquetball courts.
The centre was expanded in 2005 with a new seniors' activity room and fitness centre. In 2016 the city retained Moriyama + Teshima Architects to complete a feasibility study for the aging building, and extensive renovations began in May 2021.
The city held an event on Dec. 10, 2023, to celebrate the official reopening of the new and improved centre after its closure for renovations. The building now has a new main entrance, a separate new arena entrance, a new lobby, a new customer service desk and new activity and program rooms.
