King Township’s zero-carbon twin-pad centre
The Zancor Centre is King Township’s newest recreation facility, an $86 million building on 25 acres at the southeast corner of Seneca’s King Campus in King City. Its two NHL-sized ice rinks share the building with an aquatics centre, a six-lane lap pool and leisure pool, an artificial turf fieldhouse with a running track and a multi-use community space.
Ice Pad 1 is the JTF Homes Arena, home rink of the King Rebellion Junior A team, and Ice Pad 2 is The Country Day School Arena; both names come from ten-year partnerships, and Zancor Homes holds the naming rights to the whole centre. The Township, the Government of Ontario, the Government of Canada through the Investing in Canada Plan, Seneca Polytechnic and the development community jointly funded construction.
It was the first combined aquatics and ice-sports community facility in Canada to earn Zero Carbon Building Design Certification from the Canada Green Building Council. All-electric systems recover waste heat, daylighting saves energy, gas-fired equipment is kept to a minimum and the building is ready for geothermal.
