Two arenas under one roof in the Kootenays, 75 years on
The Trail Memorial Centre has been a gathering place for sport, entertainment and community for generations, and it marked its 75th year of operation in 2024. Home to the Trail Smoke Eaters, the historic Cominco Arena and the Sports Hall of Memories, it holds two hockey arenas, a curling club, a large gymnasium, racquetball and squash courts, meeting rooms and a commercial kitchen.
The Cominco Arena is the larger of the two ice surfaces at 85 by 200 feet, with stadium seating for 2,108 people and eight dressing rooms. The Kids Rink is the smaller surface at 70 by 147 feet, with a small viewing area. Both are used for ice activities in the fall and winter, and in summer the building turns to large special events, conferences, banquets and conventions.
Public skating is free and runs in the Cominco Arena or the Kids Rink, with a sensory-friendly skate for children and people with sensitivities in the Kids Rink.
