Home of Detroit Red Wings training camp since 1997

Centre Ice Arena exists because of a gift. In December 1995, Traverse City businessmen Marty Lagina and Craig Tester donated 13 acres in East Bay Township to I.C.E., which then built the arena. Ground broke in August 1996, and David's Rink opened on April 7, 1997, with a second sheet, then called Republic Rink, following that June. The Detroit Red Wings held their first training camp here that September, and the first NHL Prospect Tournament followed in September 1998.

Today the two sheets are David's Rink and Molon Rink. A North End Mezzanine was added in September 2010, and in summer 2016 the building got a new cooling tower and LED lighting over both rinks. The Traverse City Curling Club has thrown stones here since April 2014. The Grand Traverse Hockey Association and the TC Figure Skating Club are based in the building, alongside Hockey Shop North and A Little School House.

The Red Wings connection has kept growing: the first Red Wings Development Camp came in July 2011, and in April 2018 a crowdfunding campaign paid for renovations required by new NHL safety regulations, finished that June. September 2018 brought the 20th anniversary training camp and Prospect Tournament. The arena closed on March 16, 2020, under the state COVID-19 order, and David's Rink reopened on July 8, 2020.
