Traverse City arena named for Gordie Howe, who attended its opening in 1989
Howe Arena opened in September 1989 and is named after hockey legend Gordie Howe, who lived in Traverse City from 1987 to 1999 and attended the opening of the arena bearing his name. In 1987-88 the local I.C.E. group took responsibility for funding half of the $1.2 million arena, and it planned to disband once the building had opened.
The arena is a 25,000-square-foot multi-use building on Grand Traverse County's Civic Center property, connected to Easling Pool, with an ice rink and a dry-land exhibition hall. From September to March it becomes an ice rink managed and operated by Centre I.C.E., and it is the home venue for the local high school hockey teams.
From March to August the arena is used as an exhibition hall and event space. Annual events there include the Traverse City boat show, the Cottage and Lakefront Living Expo and the MARVAC Northwest Camper and RV Show. Traverse City Roller Derby has called Howe Arena home since January 2017.
