Family-owned since 2016; ice home of New Mexico's synchronized skating teams and UNM Lobos hockey
The McDermott Athletic Center, known as The MAC, has been family-owned and operated since 2016. Besides a full regulation ice rink, it has indoor batting cages, two full-size basketball courts, an outdoor turf field and sand volleyball courts.
The ice is home to New Mexico's only synchronized ice skating teams and to the UNM Lobos men's and women's hockey programs. UNM Hockey, part of ACHA Division II, moved its home games to the MAC for the 2025-26 season after originally playing at Outpost Ice Arena in Albuquerque, and sophomore goalie Kameron Remde says he played at the MAC throughout his youth and high school.
In February 2024 Rio Rancho's Planning and Zoning Board unanimously approved plans to expand the center, with permission for dining and lounge space alongside two planned volleyball courts and three pickleball courts.
