A city-run ice arena opened in 2000 after residents campaigned for years for a rink
The Genoveva Chavez Community Center opened in 2000 as a city-run public facility with an ice arena that was hailed at the time. The rink came out of a long campaign: Santa Fe residents worked for years to persuade the city to open it, and the Santa Fe New Mexican credited hundreds of community members, and their "Think Rink" bumper stickers, with moving it from dream to reality.
The ice arena serves hockey leagues, figure skating clubs, speed skating groups, private coaches and public skaters. Santa Fe Youth Hockey's president has said the building has probably the best ice in the Southwest, and the arena is widely regarded as one of the best in the region.
The rink has had to close more than once. In 2020 the pandemic and a city budget shortfall put its future in doubt, and in June 2025 the city closed it through the end of July for window replacement, high humidity on the ice and compressor maintenance.
