Named for alderman Ernest Starr
Ernie Starr Arena, in the community of Forest Lawn, is named in honour of Ernest Henry Starr, a Calgary alderman who died on November 10, 1981. Starr arrived in Calgary in 1920 and founded Starr's Ambulance Service, which he ran for many years. He was first elected to Calgary City Council in 1940 and served twenty-one years in total, spread across four separate periods between 1941 and 1966.
The arena itself is a single-sheet City of Calgary building: one 185-by-85-foot artificial ice surface, with spectator seating for 300 people around it. Minor and adult ice sport leagues are the regular users of the ice. Next door to the arena are Bob Bahan Aquatic & Fitness Centre and Forest Lawn Athletic Park.
