The arena on James Shouldice's gift of land
Shouldice Arena takes its name from James Shouldice, an early Calgary pioneer who, with his neighbour Alfred Sydney McKay, donated 100 acres of farmland along the Bow River in 1909 on the condition that it become a park.
The land sat untouched for 40 years after Shouldice's death in 1925 and was developed into a park in the late 1960s. Today the park holds the arena, the Shouldice Aquatic Centre and the playfields of Shouldice Athletic Park next door.
The arena has one 185-by-85-foot artificial ice surface with seating for 150, and it hosts minor and adult ice sport leagues. It has also been a venue for Western Conference women's hockey playoff games, including a 2017 game with the Edmonton WAM!.
