Alberta's only community-operated quad arena

Cardel Rec South opened on January 11, 2001, after a small group of residents spent the mid-1990s campaigning for a community-run recreation centre for the area around Fish Creek Provincial Park. Phase 1 held two arenas, one gymnasium and a couple of meeting rooms. The whole South Fish Creek complex cost CA$42.5 million, of which the City of Calgary contributed CA$25 million.

It is Alberta's only community-operated quad arena. The first two sheets opened in January 2001, and an expansion that opened in February 2012 added two more NHL-sized rinks with their own change rooms, plus a new entrance, administration area and concession; the expansion was certified LEED Silver. Each arena is NHL regulation size with viewing for 300 spectators, and the dressing rooms lead directly to the players' boxes. The same complex holds a Catholic senior high school, the Shawnessy branch of the Calgary Public Library and a YMCA. The hockey groups based here are Southwest Hockey Association, Knights Hockey Club, Calgary Buffalo Hockey Association and Plus 55 Hockey Association.

The South Fish Creek Recreation Association marks 25 years on October 1, 2026. Skate With Santa, a yearly event, returned on December 22, 2025, and the drop-in calendar includes public skate, figure skate drop-ins and 50+ Sticks and Pucks alongside the hockey associations' ice.
