Southland's two Calgary rinks, named for Flames broadcaster Ed Whalen and hockey leader Joe Kryczka.
Ed Whalen and Joseph Kryczka Arenas are the two ice rinks at Southland Leisure Centre, which, with Village Square, is one of two leisure centres owned and operated by the City of Calgary.
Ed Whalen Arena is named for the broadcaster nicknamed 'Wailin' Ed' for his nasal announcing voice, the television voice of the Calgary Flames from 1980, whose name is also on the Saddledome's broadcast booth. It is a 189-by-85-foot rink with seating for 65.
Joseph Kryczka Arena, with seating for 388, honours Joe Kryczka, a hockey administrator, coach and referee who practised law in Calgary for more than 20 years and became a judge. He was Canada's lead negotiator in securing the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union and played a key role in Calgary's successful bid for the 1988 Winter Olympics.
