The island's community rink, once a fenced outdoor sheet on the Edgartown Road, now run by the YMCA.
No public skating is posted for the next 7 days. New sessions show here as soon as the rink posts them.
The Martha's Vineyard Ice Arena was established in 1974, when island volunteers laid piping for an ice surface and cleaned it with a small plow on a Jeep. One old picture shows the sheet under a few light poles, ringed by a chain-link fence on the Edgartown Road in Oak Bluffs, across from the high school. The ice stayed open to the weather until a roof went on in 1983.
The arena grew in stages, with sections added over the years through community volunteers and donations. Heated locker rooms and showers replaced the old plywood dressing rooms, and a replacement Zamboni was bought in 2009. After a renovation in 2018, the arena merged with the YMCA of Martha's Vineyard that December.
By 2012 the rink was busy nine months a year with high school hockey, adult leagues, youth hockey, tournaments and figure skating. The YMCA runs it as a community rink for skaters of all ages and abilities.
