Hyannis's two-rink town community center, built on a half-century-old Kennedy rink site
The Hyannis Youth & Community Center's Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink is an 85 by 200 foot sheet named for the original outdoor covered rink that stood on the site for more than 50 years. It makes ice year-round and seats 1,600 on benches for hockey and up to 3,000 for non-ice events with floor seating.
Beside it the Patrick M. Butler Skating Rink has the same size ice surface with bench seating for 275, and daily public skating and US Figure Skating Basic Skills Learn to Skate lessons take place there. The Scudder Family Café, run by M+G Concessions, has bistro seating overlooking the ice, and the Barnstable Youth Hockey Association Warming Room downstairs has a gas fireplace and circular benches modeled after the former Kennedy rink.
The building has nine locker rooms and a skate sharpening and rental booth staffed seven days a week, with a fully accessible 1½ mile elevated walking track above the gym courts.
