A youth-hockey-owned rink rebuilt for efficiency

By 2014, skaters had been coming to Falmouth Ice Arena for nearly 50 years. Construction of a new arena began in 2010 with energy efficiency as a top priority, and the new building opened in 2012. Its owner, Falmouth Youth Hockey, Inc., was nominated by the Cape Light Compact in 2014 as the Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency.

The pre-engineered metal building sits on a 7-acre site and holds one full sheet and one half sheet of ice, both on refrigerated concrete floors, with custom bleachers for 850 spectators. A Green Machine refrigeration system was expected to save 132,000 kWh a year, and more than 3,000 solar panels cover the roof and the car park structures. Inside are a lobby with a fireplace, a 2,000-square-foot fitness center and a pro shop.

Falmouth Youth Hockey, the Cape Cod Storm and the Falmouth Figure Skating Club are among the groups based at the rink.
