Bourne's town rink, run by the Recreation Authority and home to Bourne High and the Bourne Skating Club
Gallo Ice Arena is the Town of Bourne's rink, built after a 1973 state act let the town borrow up to $1 million to buy land and put up an ice-skating rink. The arena opened to the public in August, and several months later hundreds of people filled the new building for a dedication ceremony naming it for John Gallo, then chairman of the Bourne Recreation Authority. Gallo had founded Gallo Construction in South Sagamore in 1938, a business his son now owns and operates.
The Bourne Recreation Authority still operates the arena, along with Bourne Scenic Park. The Bourne High Canalmen, Canal Youth Hockey, the Sandwich Blue Knights and Lady Knights, the UCT Rams of Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School, Wareham High School and the Riverview School all call it home, and the building has hosted many MIAA games. The Bourne Skating Club has been a big user of the rink for many years.
Gallo's Summer Sk8 Academy has reached its 48th annual edition. Learn-to-skate classes run for children and adults, with a Just Adults group taught by Karen Lambert, alongside senior citizen skating and adult hockey leagues. The arena has also hosted a summer hockey camp led by former NHL defenseman Jeff Serowik, who played for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins.
