Two NHL regulation sheets under an 87,000-square-foot roof
Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail is an 87,000-square-foot facility with two NHL regulation-size ice skating rinks. It is owned by Tom Logano, father of NASCAR star Joey Logano, and Joey's sister Danielle coaches at the rink.
Figure skating has a notable name on the ice: Paul Wylie coaches figure skaters here. The Extreme Icettes synchronized skating team is based at the center, and the Queen City Royals travel hockey organization calls both Extreme Ice Center and the Pineville Ice House home. Off the ice, the Beyond the Ice training studio inside the building was started by professional dancer and Barre instructor Julie Swartz.
The building had a turn as a professional venue in 2009. With Time Warner Cable Arena unavailable in the first week of the ECHL Kelly Cup playoffs, the Charlotte Checkers played the South Carolina Stingrays here, two games at the start of the series and one later, with three games in between at the North Charleston Coliseum. One of those games ended Checkers 5, Stingrays 3.
