The rink Winnetka's hockey parents built

In the late 1960s a group of Winnetka hockey parents set out to bring an indoor ice rink to the village. A community referendum failed, but they persuaded the Park Board to raise the money through the sale of revenue bonds, and the Winnetka Ice Arena opened in June 1972.

The new rink ended an era. Many Winnetkans had grown up skating at the Hubbard Woods Ice Skating Studio, whose most famous skaters were the brother-and-sister pairs team the Josephs, fourth at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics and later named bronze medalists; the studio closed after the public rink opened.

The arena's hockey program began as the Winfield Hockey Association, later became the Winnetka Hockey Club and grew after merging with Glencoe's association in the early 1980s, and in 1993 five of its teams won state titles. In 2026 the club proposed a $47.5 million expansion of the single-sheet rink, with a grand lobby and rooftop space, to the Park Board.
