Opened in December 1961 as the world's third 400 m track, and the first with a 'direct' system
The Jaap Eden IJsbaan opened in December 1961 as the third 400-metre track in the world, and the first with a 'direct' system. About 8,000 skaters from across the country came for the first weekend. The ten-year-old grandson of the champion Jaap Eden opened the track, and the millionth visitor arrived on 8 March 1964.
The 400 m oval is outdoors, and the rink says it still has the atmosphere of an outdoor track among the covered and half-covered rinks of the Netherlands. It has hosted the first marathon race on artificial ice, five Dutch allround championships and one sprint championship. The Jaap Edenhal opened beside it on 31 October 1973: more than 100 metres long and 50 wide, with seating for over 2,000. Its first big event was the 1974 Dutch figure skating championships.
More than twenty skating clubs train on the site, among them the Amsterdam Tigers ice hockey club, with over 500 active members, and Figure Skating Amsterdam, founded in 2005. The 2026-27 season marks 65 years of the rink.
