The Museumplein held a rink from 1887 to 1937 and the first official speed skating world title in 1893
No public skating is posted for the next 7 days. New sessions show here as soon as the rink posts them.
A rink lay on the Museumplein between 1887 and 1937, and in 1893 the square hosted the first official world speed skating championship, won by Jaap Eden. The present rink brings skating back to the same spot, between the Rijksmuseum, the Concertgebouw and the Van Gogh Museum.
The ice is in the open air and is not covered. It runs on the Ice-World system, which the organisers say uses up to 40 percent less electricity, and all its power is bought green, without diesel generators. Alongside free skating the programme includes curling and children's activities.
The Sven Kramer Academy gives skating lessons on the rink during the winter. On the first Tuesday afternoon of each month the rink hosts Samen Schaatsen, which pairs experienced skaters with people who cannot skate well yet. The organisers say tens of thousands of visitors skate in front of the Rijksmuseum every year, from families and tourists to schools and companies.
