Real ice under the roof of the former Sony Center
The Eisbahn im Center am Potsdamer Platz is a 600 square metre sheet of real ice inside the Center, which was the Sony Center until 2023. You skate in the open air but sheltered by the Center's roof, a fanned tent roof of fabric panels fixed with tension rods to a steel ring that rests on the surrounding buildings.
The building opened in 2000, its entertainment area on 20 January and the whole complex on 14 June, laid out in a triangular shape for work, living and leisure. It carried the Sony name for 23 years until it was renamed Das Center am Potsdamer Platz in 2023, six years after Oxford Properties bought it.
The rink is run by Vertical Sports Events GmbH, part of the Jochen Schweizer group, which says it has worked in adrenaline events for more than 35 years. The operator compares the smooth ice with training conditions at the Eisstadion Wilmersdorf, and clubs can book the mornings exclusively for figure-skating practice.
