Bern's PostFinance-Arena: the Allmend stadium of 1967 with its 9,778-place standing terrace
The Eisstadion Allmend opened in 1967 and received a roof in 1970. Its signature feature is a huge standing terrace for 9,778 people, the largest of any ice hockey stadium in the world. Once called the Allmendstadion and then BernArena, it has been the PostFinance-Arena since 2007, home of the SC Bern, and with 17,031 places it is the largest ice hall in Switzerland and one of the largest in Europe.
It was the main venue of the 2009 ice hockey world championship, and the arena was renovated extensively before and during the 2008/09 season without interrupting play. The steep ramp with over 10,000 standing places was kept, about 1,500 extra seats were created, and the old VIP area was replaced by a five-storey extension with 21 boxes. In 2008/09 SC Bern averaged 16,203 spectators per game, a European record for the fifth time in a row.
Beside the arena, the outdoor field is open to the public in winter for free skating and, at set times at weekends, free hockey.
