Europe's largest outdoor artificial ice, open since 1870

The Városligeti Műjégpálya is a listed rink that has marked the winter in City Park since the 1870s. It opened on 29 January 1870, when Crown Prince Rudolf unveiled it. The national skating federation was founded in 1908, and the first proper speed-skating race in the park was held in 1893.

Ödön Lechner designed the skating hall that opened in 1875, and a neo-baroque building by Imre Francsek replaced it in 1895. In 1926 refrigeration was installed, giving Europe its second artificial ice rink fit for competitions.

A reconstruction signed in 2008 cost nearly 4.7 billion forints, 3.175 billion of it from the European Union, and the renewed rink reopened in 2011. In winter the ice covers 12,070 square metres plus a 2,040 square metre hockey rink; outside the ice season the site offers boating.
