Chiba's waterfront rink that stays frozen all year
Aqua Rink Chiba opened on 23 October 2005 on the Shinko waterfront in Mihama Ward, and it advertises itself as a rink that can be skated on even in summer. Its sheet is of international size, 60 by 30 metres, with ice 7 centimetres thick made with a water-purification system.
The building is designed to save energy: its elliptical shape reduces the outer surface, and the ice hall is wrapped in a second shell so that cold air cannot escape. Because the ice stays frozen for years, the floor is protected against frost heave with an air layer of about 60 centimetres under it. The ceiling is 9.3 to 9.6 metres high, and 200 wooden bench seats with heated seats look over the ice.
Besides general skating, the rink runs skating classes every month for children from age four, school pupils and adults.
