Chur's mobile rink on the Quaderwiese since 2004/05, bought in 2007
Chur set up a mobile ice field on the Quaderwiese for the first time in the 2004/05 season, as a trial to replace the Calandastrasse artificial rink that had closed in 2000. It was reserved first of all for public skating and figure skating. The council majority then favoured a permanent solution and the purchase of a used installation, which voters approved on 9 September 2007.
The refrigeration machine stood in a barrack on the east side of the Quaderwiese until it was moved into an underground structure in 2014. The mobile ice field has been a winter fixture for Chur's residents for many years, and about 80 Swiss communities run such temporary artificial ice fields in winter.
The rink had to stop operating in the 2020/21 season because of Covid, and on 20 September 2022 the city council decided not to set it up. The council's proposal is to keep operating it for the time being with the existing refrigeration machine from 2005.
