A 1963 roller rink that became the Franz-Siegel-Halle

The ice on Freiburg's Ensisheimer Straße goes back to 1963, when the Eis- und Rollsportclub Freiburg, founded on 30 January 1961 by Franz Siegel and eight others, built a roller rink there. The surface was first frozen in 1967, the first ice hockey game followed on 2 December 1967, and a roof in 1970 and later extensions created the hall that became the Franz-Siegel-Halle.

The club finished sixth in the Bundesliga and won the German Cup in 1983/84, and the hall was regularly sold out. The EHC Freiburg e. V. was founded on 6 September 1984, won promotion to the DEL in 2003 and has been part of the DEL2 since 2015.

The stadium is called the Echte Helden Arena, a name the club dedicates together with an initiative for the Freiburg children's and youth clinics. The club says the arena opens to public skaters from October to early April.
