The Patinoire des Vergers opened to the public on 8 December 1978, the first facility of the Meyrin sports centre, which was inaugurated officially on 1 September 1979. The centre stands where a skating pond froze each winter between 1889 and 1921, drawing skaters from Geneva as well as from Meyrin. Work began in 1977 to plans by the Carouge architects ACAU, and the rink was then open-air.
A group of Meyrin residents founded the hockey and skating club in 1976, before building began on the rink. The Club des Patineurs de Meyrin, with a hockey and an artistic section, still trains here. The covered rink was added in 2009, after the stadium grandstand in 2008, so the site now has two rinks.
The open-air one gives Meyrin the look of a mountain resort on cold winter weekends, while the covered one keeps skating possible in any weather. The club has also hosted a festive afternoon followed by an ice disco on the indoor rink.
