Ghent's only ice rink, the result of a skating club's campaign that began in 1980
The Gentse Schaatsclub was founded on 26 March 1980 to bring an ice rink to Ghent. The campaign took root at a side arm of the Leie at the end of the Gentse Watersportbaan, when it was cold outside and thousands of people could skate on open ice. The press sided with those who backed the idea with their signatures, and eight months after the start the club's board handed the mayor 28,000 signatures. The rink itself came about only through private initiative, and the club then began working with N.V. Kristallijn.
Kristallijn counts 40 years of skating together. The rink has 3,000 m² of ice and is described by the short track club STKG as the only ice rink in East Flanders. It is also home to the Ghent Dragons ice hockey club, founded in 2020, and it hosted the 44th Easter Cup in April 2026.
