A town-centre hall opened in 2007 beside the railway station
Ilmenau's city council decided on 12 May 2005 to build an ice hall. Skaters already had a mobile tent rink of 25 by 25 metres, put up every winter since 2000, and students of the technical university had founded an ice hockey club in its wake. Building started in March 2006 and the hall was inaugurated on 20 October 2007.
The hall stands in the town centre by the railway station, on the former site of the station hotel and a glassworks. Its roof is shaped after the town's glassworks, and the slate cladding on the facade echoes the region's traditional buildings. Inside are a 60 by 30 metre ice surface, a seated stand for 250 and a standing stand for 650.
Local clubs for figure skating, ice hockey, ice stock sport and curling train here outside the public hours, and the Kickelhahn Rangers play their home games in the hall. It also hosts shows, figure-skating competitions and training of the para ice hockey national team, and as a multifunctional building it serves other events in summer. The city of Ilmenau runs it.
