Karlsruhe's Schlossplatz rink since 2003/2004

Karlsruhe's city-centre ice rink first opened in winter 2003/2004 and now runs as Stadtwerke Karlsruhe WINTERZEIT on the Schlossplatz, in front of the palace. For nine weeks each winter an open-air rink fills the historic square, and the organisers work with their long-time partner interevent GmbH on the ice.

In 2022 the rink swapped skates for roller skates: from 24 November 2022 to 8 January 2023 the first WINTERZEIT roller rink ran without ice. Ice has since returned on a smaller surface that needs less power and water, and the stock-shooting lanes now sit on a roll-sport plastic floor instead of ice. A 2019 press report called the rink, then more than 2,000 square metres, the largest open-air ice rink in southern Germany.

Trainers from ERC Waldbronn and the Ice Freestyler Karlsruhe taught the rink's beginner and advanced courses in 2019. Children and teenagers are still the main audience, according to the organisers, and the season ends with a Beat Night closing party; on New Year's Eve the stock arena beside the ice becomes a dance floor.
