A volunteer rink beside the dead Maas arm in Kerkdriel, going since 1983

Stichting IJsbaan Maasdriel, known as SIJM, grew out of two associations: the football club DSC and the cycling club Het Luchtschip. The first skating took place in 1975 on the DSC lot, and from 1976 to 1978 the club tried to turn DSC's practice field into a rink, sometimes spraying water all night only to find no ice in the morning.

Races were held on the dead arm of the Maas on 27 January 1979, and in 1980, after a lot of spraying, there was ice at last, with a stove that gave more smoke than warmth. Until 1983 that plot served as the rink, after which the municipality made ground by the dead Maas arm available.

There the first work began in August 1983 with building a canteen, everything having to be brought across the meadow because there was no ramp down from the dike yet. On 25 November the rink was officially opened and SIJM got going. Today the rink is being turned into an innovative multifunctional facility for skating and many other sports.
