Cologne's Christmas-market rink on the Heumarkt
Heinzels Wintermärchen is Köln's largest Christmas market, spread over Alter Markt and Heumarkt in the old town with more than 100 stalls in themed lanes and small squares. Its open-air ice rink on the Heumarkt has straights of more than 100 metres and a lap around the imposing equestrian monument.
The rink is run with the Lentpark, the operators of Cologne's ice hall, and is described by the market as the finest open-air rink in Germany. On Mondays children skate at reduced prices with an ice school, and children in a Kölner Haie shirt, up to 12 years, get in free.
Around the rink the market offers a more than 100-year-old Ferris wheel in front of the historic town hall, with views as far as the cathedral.
