For nearly nine seasons the Øvre Torv square in central Kristiansand has been turned into a big skating rink, for residents and tourists alike. Kompis opened for the first time in 2017, when VIBB (formerly LOS) and Spareskillingsbanken each put in one million kroner, and the rink is made possible by a partnership between Kristiansand kommune and Å Strøm.
Kompis is a large joint project inside the kommune, with the leisure unit, the parks department, the sports unit and the citizens' service point all contributing to the skating fun. The parks department plans, builds and runs the rink. In 2023 the four units bought sixty new orange skates marked Kompis. The rink has become popular with cruise tourists, is used even on Christmas Eve, and is a popular outing for school classes in Kristiansand.
