A Bollenstreek skating club founded in 1891, rebuilding its rink three times

The Lissesche IJsclub was founded on Tuesday 13 January 1891 at the inn De Witte Zwaan, after the long, severe winter of 1890-91 with temperatures down to -16°C. Well-off citizens hoped that having rinks made would give work to the unemployed and ease hardship in the village, and the club is one of the oldest in the Bollenstreek.

In 1972 it rented land in the Poelpolder from farmer Jan Langeveld, and on 8 December 1972 Nic Mieloo started the pump that put the new rink under water. A wooden clubhouse of 26 by 6 metres had been built beside it, but in a storm on the night of 2 to 3 April 1973 the building was blown completely into the air. In 1987 the rink had to move again, to its present site on the Randmeerstraat, to make way for a new housing district.

Today the club keeps a carefully tended 333 m natural-ice track with floodlights, festive lighting and music. Its own table counts the days the rink has been open since 1973, and the club held its 100th annual meeting on 27 November 1990.
