A Haarlemmermeer ice club founded in 1890, remembered for its horse-sleigh races on the Hoofdvaart

The ice club Nieuw Vennep en Omstreken was founded on 9 December 1890; the club still has rules fixed at a meeting on 13 December 1906. Since its founding it has aimed to promote the pleasures of skating, and today it keeps a fully swept 400 m track with a special inner track where the youngest can practise.

Memories gathered by the club recall horse-sleigh races, which needed a hard winter, and horses that struggled down the steep Hoofdvaart bank; the whole village came out to watch. When the Hoofdvaart froze, one volunteer marked out where the ice was good and that was where the track went, and sometimes races were held for the benefit of the poor.

Sleighs and skates were used by the villagers to have fun together, though a sleigh was really a means of transport for farmers living far from the village, and skates were handy for visiting distant relatives.
