In the 1950s the elected officials of Megève had the idea of building a large sports centre for the commune, and the architects Edmond Fontayne and Maurice Novarina designed a complex combining summer and winter activities. The covered ice rink opened at Christmas 1967, and the Palais des Sports was inaugurated in 1969, sponsored by the singer Sacha Distel and his wife.
The olympic-size rink measures 60 by 30 metres, with 2,700 seats in the stands. It has hosted four junior world figure-skating championships (1976, 1977, 1978 and 1980), four French championships (1971, 1984, 2008 and 2015) and the 1971 curling world championships. Heat given off by the ice-making plant is recovered to warm the complex's pools, gymnasium and covered tennis courts, and solar panels on the roof heat the water for the ice resurfacer.
The Club des sports de Megève plays here: its ice hockey section, the Boucs de Megève, were French champions in 1984 and are associated at the top level with the Aigles de Saint-Gervais in the Mont-Blanc Hockey Club. The rink sits inside Le Palais, which describes itself as the largest indoor leisure complex in the Alps.
