Bamestra, named after the old Latin name of the Beemster, has skated on the same spot since 1933
Currently out of season This is a natural-ice rink: the club's home page says the rink is currently closed. Water is pumped onto the field from early December and the track is marked out as soon as the ice allows. Official schedule update
IJsclub Bamestra was officially founded on Tuesday 4 January 1909 and takes its name from the old Latin name for the Beemster. Its statutes aimed at making and maintaining rinks, and the club held no races at first: members put all their energy into sweeping the rinks so that people from outside the polder could skate in the Beemster too.
The rink has lain on the Nicolaas Cromhoutlaan since September 1933. In December 1933 the club joined the KNSB and was asked to organise national figure-skating competitions. The first huts were followed in 1943 by a 'volkskeet', the control hut served the swimming club in summer, and a new clubhouse built in 1966 is still in use.
Each winter about 25 cm of water is pumped onto the 80-by-150-metre field, and when the ice allows, an oval track of about 350 metres is marked out.
