A 60 by 30 metre ice hall from the 1980s, home of the Wanderers Germering.
The ice hall of Germering's Polariom leisure centre opened in the 1980s, and in November 2007 the town marked its 25th anniversary. Its high building costs made it controversial at first. It was approved under mayor Rudolf Bay and the council, who with the skaters kept at it until the hall was realised, and by 2007 the current mayor said the town could no longer imagine life without it.
The ice measures 60 by 30 metres, 1,800 square metres, and the hall holds up to 2,000 spectators. The Stadtwerke Germering run it. Its original ammonia refrigeration plant also heated the pools of the neighbouring open-air bath; when its gas engines became inefficient, the plant was rebuilt with electric motors, which cut the hall's total energy demand by 25 per cent.
The Wanderers Germering, with ice hockey and figure skating sections, play at the Polariom. The town's hockey history goes back to a club founded in May 1975, and the Wanderers became Bayernliga champions in 1994/95.
