Neuilly-sur-Marne's curved glulam rink of 1973

Neuilly-sur-Marne's municipal rink was inaugurated in 1973, built for the owner SEMEASO to designs by the architect Claude Le Goas. Against the strict right angles of its surroundings, it takes a deliberate curve. The roof is a glulam frame whose beams form curves and counter-curves and anchor on the market square, and the building stands on a brick base.

It was conceived as an intercommunal Olympic rink with a 26 by 56 metre ice surface, lit from above by translucent skylights and on the west side by vertical glazing. Its low height and footprint make a gap in a tightly built district. The entrance sits on the cramped side, a result of changes to the urban plan since it was built: the rink was meant to be bordered on the east by a high-rise tower that was never built.

The ice hockey team of the town, the Bisons de Neuilly-sur-Marne, plays here.
