A 1908 skating tradition in a stadium rebuilt in 2026
Opava's winter stadium traces its tradition back to 1908, when the town hosted a world figure-skating championship; a European championship cup followed in 1928. The stadium itself was built in 1953 on the site of an earlier skating ground which, after Vienna and Budapest, was the largest in the Habsburg monarchy.
A roof structure and artificial cooling were added in 1956 and 1957, and stands and facilities followed. After decades of makeshift repairs, a reconstruction began in 2023 and ran until September 2026, when the rebuilt stadium was officially opened.
Today's Slezan Aréna is a multi-purpose stadium and the home of HC Slezan Opava. Its main ice surface measures 60 by 26 metres and holds 1,700 people, and a smaller spare ice surface in the town's Městské sady park holds 100. The arena says it also stages cultural events such as an ice cinema.
