The pond-basin rink nicknamed Narvisen

Spikersuppa is the pond basin in the middle of Oslo that turns into a skating rink every winter. The basin was laid out in 1956 to a plan by the architect Arnstein Arneberg and paid for by Christiania Spigerverk, which is how the place got its nickname. It was torn down in 1974 to 1975 for the metro tunnel between Nationaltheatret and Stortinget station and rebuilt afterwards, and the rebuilt basin was about 25 per cent larger.

A skating rink was built in the basin in 1994, paid for by Narvesen, and nicknamed Narvisen. During the Lillehammer Olympics that year a temporary rink of about 1,000 square metres was laid there and was a success from the start; in 1995 it became permanent, open for skating around the clock with around 100 operating days each winter. The kommune calls it perhaps the most romantic skating rink in the capital, with the ice bathed in the Christmas lights around the square. Skating is free and the ice is prepared every morning.
