A family-run stadium opened on 1 January 1980

In the 1970s Bad Liebenzell's mayor and spa director wanted to make the spa town more attractive for tourism, and the town planned its own ice stadium. Because subsidies were missing, private investors were found in 1978, and the ice opened on 1 January 1980 although construction had not gone entirely to schedule.

The name Polarion, a blend of Polareis and Orion, won out over the other proposal, Alascala. The stadium was sold in 1982 and changed operators several times; after a forced auction the children of the original investors, Monika and Matthias Bay, bought it back, and the third generation now works in the stadium.

Every first Wednesday of the month the music is switched off for an Enjoy the Silence evening, and the stadium runs on 100 per cent hydro-electric green power.
