South Thuringia's largest ice hall, built in 2003
The Eishalle in Sonneberg was built in 2003 and has a 30 by 60 metre ice surface, 1,800 square metres in all. It calls itself the largest ice hall in South Thuringia and sits inside the SonneBad, the town's pool and sauna complex.
The season runs from the start of October to the end of March. Besides public skating there is a KidsClub skating school where children learn the basics with penguin-shaped skating aids, ice stock shooting and ice discos, and from December a Friday-evening EisBeats party on the ice. Skaters can use the pool and sauna afterwards at half the entry price.
Clubs and players can train here too: the SonneBad says ice hockey and figure skating are no problem, and it sells hockey training camps with hotel overnight stays. The town describes the hall as offering everything from a family outing to a training camp.
