A hand-made natural-ice rink kept by local volunteers

Kasa Skate Rink is a natural-ice rink that local people set up together every year in mid-December: the skating club, the sports association, sports promotion committee members, the local fire brigade and primary school teachers all take part. Because the ice is natural, the weather can stop skating, and the town asks visitors to check that skating is possible before they set out.

The rink has its roots in 1975, when a local figure and sports association officials urged the authorities to develop the site as a skating ground. The hand-made natural rink was finished in 1977 and the management building followed in 1978. A roller-skating rink was added beside it in 1986 and extended in 1994.

Beginners can lean on support aids made from the legs of old school desks and chairs, the reception sells hot tea, canned coffee and cup noodles, and primary school classes come to skate during lessons. Visitors without a car take the town bus and a shared taxi to the Shoboji-iriguchi stop, then walk five minutes to the ice.
