Opened in 1970 after a public fund-raising drive
De Vechtsebanen opened in 1970 in Utrecht's Overvecht district, after a large fund-raising drive among the people of Utrecht. It has a partly covered 400-metre oval for long-track skating and an indoor hall for ice hockey and figure skating, and describes itself as the only artificial-ice rink in the province of Utrecht. The oval has held the now superseded men's 300-metre world record, 22,83 by Gerard van Velde.
The 30 by 60 metre inner rink sits in the ice hockey stadium, which holds up to 4,000 visitors. Utrecht Dragons are among the ice hockey clubs listed at the rink, and the KNSB Talent Team of short-track skaters trains here, mostly on the 111-metre track. Short-track stars including Xandra Velzeboer and Selma Poutsma, both Olympic champions, trained with the talent programme on the Vechtsebanen. The complex also houses the head office of the KNSB, the national skating federation.
