The Waterfront Leisure Complex in Greenock opened on 3 October 1997, after a press preview the day before. The project grew out of a long-standing commitment to build a curling rink for Inverclyde. Newcastle-based leisure specialists Faulkner Brown were the architects, and more than 2,500 people came through the doors on opening day.
The building is a structure of enormous concrete ribs, reminiscent of an upturned ship, joined by a curtain of glass, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the pools and rinks that look across the Firth of Clyde. The rink was fitted from the start with a disco unit, lighting gantry, smoke and artificial snow, and it had capacity for up to 750 people at the opening.
Curling shaped the ice: it has four curling lanes, and it can be floored over to turn the hall into a concert or banqueting venue for up to 1,000 people. A team of curlers was already practising on it when the press came to preview the complex.
