Chesapeake's twin-sheet ice complex, revived from a bankrupt rink by ex-Admiral Patrick Cavanagh in 2003
Patrick Cavanagh played for the Admirals in their 1989 inaugural season in Hampton Roads, retired from pro hockey in 1995 and stayed in Virginia Beach. By January 1997 he had founded Chilled Ponds, a group planning a double ice rink for the region. In 2003 he took over Arc Ice Sports out of bankruptcy and turned it into the Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex.
The 90,000-square-foot complex holds two NHL rinks and Major's Bar and Grill. It is home to the Hampton Roads Whalers youth and junior teams, the Tidewater Figure Skating Club, the Old Dominion University Hockey Club and the Ponds Adult Hockey League, which runs four levels of play year-round. It is also the official practice facility of the ECHL's Norfolk Admirals, a team Cavanagh has owned since 2019.
Youth hockey tournament series, junior hockey showcases, development camps and skating competitions draw teams from across the United States and Canada. In 2023 Cavanagh added a second rink, buying the Hampton Roads Iceplex in Yorktown, now Chilled Ponds at Yorktown.
