The former Hampton Roads Iceplex, bought by Chilled Ponds in 2023 and reopened after a $2 million renovation
Chilled Ponds at Yorktown is the former Hampton Roads Iceplex. Patrick Cavanagh, who runs Chilled Ponds in Chesapeake and owns the ECHL's Norfolk Admirals, bought it in 2023 and went straight into renovations that continued through February 2024. The $2 million project, helped by naming-rights partner Langley Federal Credit Union, improved the rink and upgraded the lobby, and a ribbon cutting at the 34,000-square-foot building marked its completion on November 6, 2024.
The rink now carries Chilled Ponds' programs on the Peninsula: Whalers learn-to-play, rec and travel hockey, the Ponds Adult Hockey League and the Tidewater Figure Skating Academy, and it now hosts tournaments and skating competitions. Cavanagh's investment earned York County's Distinguished Business Award for growth and investment, and the rink offers free skate sessions and trial lessons in hockey and figure skating in partnership with the county. Blades Bar and Grill serves food and drinks on site.
